Anna,

I didn't see your reply until tonight. Thank you for your heartfelt words of encouragement. I appreciate your empathy. Right now, I am fortunate to have my in-laws nearby who have much less drama in their lives. Thanks for taking the time to write back.

Melody,

I'm also grateful for your words. I know my dad is working through something, but it's hard to accept the way he's chosen to go about it. I guess I'll keep looking for what I can learn from this as well.

All the best, to both of you.

Hello Anna,
Thank you for your article. I feel my boyfriend is a spiritual addiction. He has paid lots of money to those spiritual people and caused him into big debts. I didnt think those spiritual people have helped him. I really like to help him. You are right. They need to go through the process on their own and to learn the lessons by themselves.

Anna,

So great to have a list of things we can do about our spiritual imbalance!

Many of these are things that I have been craving and unable to do because I was backpacking for so long.. But, as you said, you finally get to the point where you cannot escape it anymore and I reached mine. I needed to go back to having a home, a routine, cooking, exercise, non-spiritual activities with less spiritual friends... So I finally decided to cut my traveling short and come back home. There was no point to it anymore because I couldn't fully appreciate it.

Much much thanks for helping me trust my intuition a bit more!

@ Dan - I've also had some experience with people with addictions and, Anna is are absolutely right that it's a process they have to go through and come out on their own. We can only support the person (in a wise and loving way!) while they go through it.

Hi Dan,

Wanted to reply to your comment as I felt for you and what you're going through with your dad. As someone who has been totally into the spiritual stuff (and enjoyed it a little too much), I can tell you that being out of balance can be a great learning experience. It teaches you a lot and I'm sure that your dad is learning something here. Even if it is very disruptive to you and your family.

I know people, close to me, who are going through addictions (won't elaborate here as it wouldn't be fair on them) and I have to say one thing I have learned about addictions is, you can't make something come back into balance again. They have to learn it for themselves...

Anna,
I stumbled on your article, because I believe my dad has a spiritual addiction. Much of what you describe as "ungrounded" in your article fits how I would describe my dad. Yet, I think he believes he's on a journey of enlightenment to become a spiritual healer. So far, he's left my mom and gone on a pilgrimage to John of God in Brazil. Soon he'll move to New Mexico to be around people who are "more open minded." I know he gets to make his own choices, but I don't know what I should do. His choices hurt me, my mother, my siblings. I believe in forgiveness, but I don't know how to get there, or even how to communicate with him anymore. Do you have any advice? Sorry if this is not meant to be an advice column. I liked your article.

My mother is not able to match where I am at and I am constantly waiting for her to do so. I am really angry at her for not letting go of her limits and just be free.
I watch her shutdown and then feel insulted. Just experienced the clarity of my mom's and my relationship. Now,act of doing.

Hi Anna, very cool article. I actually had some ribs tonight for dinner and I felt crappy right afterwords, so I can relate to the symptom some people relate to becoming more spiritual and having an aversion to meat.

I have an advanced nutrition background so I wonder if maybe I can find an alternative to meat that is just as grounding, but that doesn't make you feel like crap. Maybe some root vegetables like potatoes or red root vegetables like beets that correspond to the root Chakra.

I can totally relate to the other symptoms as well, such as being bored by non-spiritual things and not caring as much about physical appearance etc.

I'm thinking of going back to Martial Arts training soon as I think that may be a very grounding experience for me.
